In many cultures the Sun is associated with gold. In Europe, amber was thought to be the tears of the Sun, while and in Australia and among many Indigenous peoples of North America, quartz was sacred in its connections not only to the Sun, but to the Sky World as well. To the Zia, a people centred at Zia Pubelo in New Mexico, abalone sea shell is found in a myth of the first two sisters, who lead the people up from the first world, are responsible for creating the sun. ββNow all is covered with darkness, but after a while we will have light.β These two womenβ¦ created the sun from white shell, turquoise, red stone and abalone shell. After making the sun they carried him to the east and there made a camp, as there were no houses. The next morning they ascended a high mountain and dropped the sun down behind it, and after a time he began to ascend, and when the people saw the light their hearts rejoiced. When far off his face was blue; as he came nearer the face grew brighter. They, however, did not see the sun himself, but a mask so large that it covered his entire body. The people saw that the world was large and the country beautiful, and when the women returned to the village they said to the people: βWe are the mothers of all.ββ Rachel Alexander explains that βin Hopi mythology, the Sun dresses up, and so seems somewhat human. Just before it rose up in the East, the Sun put on a grey fox skin, and then it became dawn. This was known as the white dawn. When he was the bright morning yellow dawn, he removed his grey fox outfit, substituting it for a yellow fox outfit.β
