In Dante’s Purgatorio, when he reaches the top of the mountain, he sees the seven stars of Ursa Minor, the little bear. They announce the coming of his beloved Beatrice, symbol of Divine Wisdom, who appears in the Griffin chariot, Ursa Minor, the great bear. Beatrice is robed and veiled in green, and her eyes are like emeralds. This is curiously similar to the emerald colour associated with Mount Qaf, and the emerald sycamore of Ancient Egypt. Jocelyn Godwin explains that those who understand Iranian theosophy see this colour not as a simple emblem of Hope, but “an announcement of the ‘Smaragdine Vision’ that is presumably the common experience of all who rise so far.”

In Hindu tradition, the seven stars of Ursa Major, are known as “the seven luminous ones,” or the “‘seven rishis’ who are gathered around God (the North Star) on top of the world mountain (Mount Meru).” This celestial drama plays out on earth with the court of the King or Emperor who receives his mandate from heaven. Interestingly in China the very symbol of the Emperor is the Dragon, while the Empress is represented by a phoenix.
